The best dash cam for a Ford Transit Custom is the Nextbase 422GW at around £150. It records in 2K, logs speed ten times a second through 10Hz GPS, pops off its magnetic mount when you leave the van overnight, and Nextbase's hardwire kit is a straightforward fit on the Custom's fuse panel. If your Custom has glazed rear doors, the Vantrue E2 at around £160 adds a 2.7K rear camera in the box. If you want the best footage money buys, the Nextbase 622GW at around £250 stabilises 4K through the diesel idle.
We have already written about the full-size van in best dash cam for a Ford Transit. This piece is about what is different in the Custom, which is smaller, more raked at the front and, on the newer van, much busier behind the mirror.
What the Custom changes
The windscreen
The Custom's screen is more steeply raked than the big Transit's. A camera on a fixed-angle mount ends up looking at the sky, so you want a mount with a proper tilt adjustment. Nextbase's Click&Go and Vantrue's mount both have enough range. Sit in the driver's seat, set the lens so the bonnet edge is just in frame at the bottom, and check it again after the adhesive has cured for a day, because a mount that creeps by two degrees on a raked screen loses a lot of road.
The sensor housing
Newer Customs have a large housing behind the rearview mirror carrying the rain sensor and the camera for lane keeping and emergency braking. That pod owns the middle of the glass. Mount your dash cam to one side of it, driver's side if you can, so the wiper still clears the lens. Never fix anything to the housing and keep the lead clear of its window. The old habit of tucking the camera dead centre behind the mirror does not work on this van.
The fuse panel
On the previous-generation Custom the cabin fuse box sits behind the glovebox, which drops down on its hinges to reveal it. On the 2023-on Custom the cabin changed and the handbook diagram is the thing to follow. Whichever van you have, two things matter more than which slot a forum recommends. First, confirm one ignition-switched fuse and one permanent fuse with a multimeter, because parking mode needs both. Second, check whether the panel uses standard mini blade fuses or the smaller Micro2 type before you order a fuse tap kit, because Fords of this era mix them and the wrong tap will not seat.
Not confident with a fuse tap? An auto electrician will do it for around £60 to around £80 and it is a good hour's money. The cable route is up the A-pillar under the trim, along the headlining to the mirror, and the pillar trim on a Custom comes off with a trim tool and a bit of nerve. Mind the curtain airbag: route the cable behind the trim where it will not foul the bag if it deploys.
The 12 V socket
Use it for testing. Plug the camera in, drive round the block, check the angle, then hardwire. A camera running off the socket stops at ignition off, and the Custom is a tool van; the moment it matters is 3 am outside your house.
The cameras
Nextbase 422GW
The one we would fit to most Customs. 2K resolution reads plates that 1080p cannot, the 140-degree lens covers the full lane and a bit of pavement, and the magnetic mount means the camera lives in the glovebox when the van is parked somewhere you would not leave a phone. Parking mode with Nextbase's hardwire kit. Rear module sold separately if you ever want it.
Vantrue E2
For a Custom with rear glass or a Double Cab-in-Van. 2.7K front and 2.7K rear, voice control, GPS, and a 24-hour parking mode once hardwired. The rear cable run on a Custom is short enough that the lead in the box reaches the rear doors without an extension, which is not true of the big Transit.
Nextbase 622GW
4K with image stabilisation and a polarising filter that takes the pale Custom dash off the glass. Emergency SOS with what3words. It is the dearest Nextbase and the rear module is extra, but the footage is a class above and it shares the 422GW's mount and app.
Viofo A129 Pro Duo
4K front, 1080p rear in the box, buffered parking mode, adhesive mount only. Around £170 and the best value if you want dual coverage and can live with a plainer app. The A129 Pro Duo is a favourite with owners who read spec sheets before forums.
One thing to know before you order: VIOFO has dropped the A129 series from its own shop, so Amazon is the only place still listing it. The maker's current front-and-rear model is the A229 Pro 2CH, sold direct by VIOFO at around $350. The store prices in US dollars and delivers to the UK.
Nextbase 222XR
Budget dual at around £120, 1080p front and rear, no GPS or WiFi. The 222XR is the right pick for a second van or an apprentice's Custom where the point is coverage, not cinema.

What we'd buy
Panel van Custom: the Nextbase 422GW, hardwired behind the glovebox with the right fuse taps, 128GB card. Glazed or crew Custom: the Vantrue E2, hardwired the same way. A van that is also your whole business: the 622GW. The Ford Transit dash cam product list has current prices for all of them and the rest of the Transit-rated cameras. If you are choosing between front-only and dual on any van, best dash cam for vans, front and rear goes through that decision.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best dash cam for a Ford Transit Custom?
The Nextbase 422GW for most owners: 2K, 10Hz GPS, a magnetic mount that pops off at night, and a hardwire kit that fits the Custom's fuse panel. If the van has glazed rear doors, the Vantrue E2 gives you a matching 2.7K rear camera in the box.
Where is the fuse box on a Ford Transit Custom for a dash cam hardwire?
On the previous-generation Custom the passenger compartment fuse panel is behind the glovebox, reached by dropping the glovebox down. On the 2023-on van check the handbook, because the cabin layout changed. Either way, confirm an ignition-switched and a permanent fuse with a multimeter rather than a forum post.
Does the Transit Custom have a 12 V socket for a dash cam?
Yes, and it is the easy way to test a camera before you commit to a position. It is not the way to run one. A cable across the dash of a working van gets pulled out, and socket power stops at ignition off, so parking mode never runs.
Will a dash cam obstruct the Transit Custom's driver assistance sensors?
Only if you mount it in front of the sensor housing behind the mirror. Keep the camera to the side of that pod, inside the wiper sweep, and nothing in the camera or its lead crosses the sensor's window. Never stick anything to the housing itself.
Do I need the rear camera on a Transit Custom panel van?
Not for the road behind, because there is no rear glass to see through. Some owners aim the second camera at the load area from the bulkhead to record break-ins. If you want a view of following traffic on solid doors, that is an external camera and a different job.
