Most HGV drivers we speak to have a fire extinguisher rattling around the cab somewhere. Half the time it's the wrong size, the wrong class, or it's been sitting there since the truck was new. That's a problem.

If you're hauling for a fleet, your operator probably has a policy. If you're owner-driver, the responsibility lands on you. Either way, picking the right unit matters more than most drivers realise. A 1kg extinguisher buys you about 8 seconds of discharge time, and that's it.

What size extinguisher do HGV drivers actually need?

For a tractor unit cab, 1kg is the working minimum. 2kg is better if you can mount it properly. Anything bigger and you're into workshop territory, which won't fit safely in a cab.

Most ADR loads (dangerous goods) require a minimum 2kg ABC powder extinguisher with a BSI Kitemark, sometimes 6kg depending on the tonnage. Bit of a niche point but worth knowing. ABC powder handles solids, liquids, and gases. BC handles only liquids and gases. So why would you ever pick BC?

Two reasons. BC powder is cleaner. It doesn't form the same baked-on residue ABC does, which means slightly less misery if you ever have to discharge it inside a cab. And BC is sometimes cheaper.

Just remember it's not rated for Class A fires, so if your load includes pallets, paper, or anything solid, get an ABC instead.
