Best impact drivers for electricians 2026 — what holds up after a year

Sparks use an impact driver more than almost any other power tool. Back box screws, tray fixings, conduit clips, ceiling pendants, the bashed plug into trunking, and the same again all day. So the question isn't 'which one's quickest' — quickest is meaningless when you're driving a 4mm machine screw into a back box. The question is which ones last.

We read through about six months of buyer reviews on the main 18V impact drivers, then cross-referenced with what working sparks are actually saying about them on ElectriciansForums and the Reddit electrician threads. We do not physically test tools. What we do is notice which drivers come up again in the year-two reviews, not just the unboxing.

Three made the list. Here's the honest read.

Why electricians need a different impact driver brief

Most impact driver reviews are written for chippies. Chippies want max torque for long structural screws into oak. That's not your job.

Your job is the opposite of that. You want fine torque control at the low end. You want a precise low speed for getting a screw started without stripping a back box thread. You want a head that's compact enough to get into a tight ceiling rose. And you want a battery platform that already runs your drill, your saw, and your torch.

The truly heavy hitters — the ones rated for 250+ Nm — are overkill for spark work. You want the 180-220Nm range with three-speed control and a properly tuned low gear. That's a different shortlist from what gets recommended to general builders.

DeWalt DCF887 — the spark's default for a reason

The DCF887 has been around long enough that almost every working spark has either owned one or borrowed one off a mate. It's now in its current XR brushless form and it's still the one we'd point an apprentice at first.

Specs that actually matter: 205Nm of peak torque, 3,250rpm top speed, three-speed selector, and an overall length of 135mm. That last figure is the one to notice. 135mm is short enough to fit between joists into a ceiling rose without coming at it sideways. Some of the cheaper rivals are 165mm or longer and that's a real pain in tight work.

The three speeds are properly distinct rather than just marketing. Mode 1 is slow enough that you can sink a 3.5mm self-tapper into thin steel without snapping the head. Mode 3 will rip a 50mm decking screw into pine without thinking about it. Most rival drivers' 'speed 1' is still too fast for fine work.

What the long-term reviews flag — the trigger sometimes gets sticky in dusty environments, but the fix is a quick blast of compressed air rather than a service. The chuck retention spring weakens after maybe two years of constant bit changes, but it's a cheap part to swap if you're handy. The motor itself just keeps going.

Makita DTD157 — the lighter alternative

If you're already in the Makita LXT ecosystem, or you find DeWalts too chunky, the DTD157 is the obvious comparator.

Makita's strength is balance. The DTD157 sits in your palm differently from the DeWalt — lighter at the front, more weight in the handle — and after eight hours of overhead work that adds up. Sparks who do a lot of suspended ceiling and high-level tray work tend to drift toward Makita for that reason.

The 4-speed selector is genuinely useful. Speed 4 is the 'tightening only' mode that cuts off cleanly, which matters when you're driving small machine screws into a fitting and don't want to overdrive. The DeWalt has three modes; the Makita's four is one more notch of low-end control.

What we'd flag — peak torque is 180Nm, lower than the DeWalt's 205Nm. For 95% of electrical work that's irrelevant. For the times you're driving M10 fixings into a steel beam, the DeWalt edges it. Mostly the difference is academic.

Bosch Professional GDX 18V — the wildcard

The Bosch GDX is an impact driver and impact wrench in the same body. The chuck has a 1/4 inch hex AND a 1/2 inch square drive, switchable. That's an unusual combo and it suits some sparks really well.

If you ever need to undo nuts on a tray bracket, a heavy-duty bond, or a generator install, the impact wrench mode means you don't need to carry a separate tool. For a spark whose week is 90% drilling and 10% socket work, this is genuinely useful — and your van weighs less.

What the reviews say: the build is properly Bosch Pro (different beast from the green DIY range), the brake on the chuck is sharp, and the bit ejection on the 1/4 hex is satisfyingly positive — no fishing for stuck bits.

What to know — at 200Nm hex / 250Nm square it's plenty. The body is a touch heavier than the Makita and the head is longer because of the dual-chuck. If you're tight on space in a junction box, that head length might be the deciding factor against it. Honest read.

What we'd skip for spark work

The big-torque 'mid-handle' impact drivers marketed for HVAC or auto. They're brilliant for what they're for. They're too long and too heavy for ceiling rose work and the low-end control is rougher.

Brushed budget impact drivers. Two reasons. The brushes need replacing. And the speed control on a brushed driver tends to be binary, which is exactly the wrong characteristic for fine electrical work where you want a delicate trickle of torque.

Generic Amazon house-brand impacts at £40-£60. They drive screws fine. But the 1/4 hex chuck is loose-tolerance, bits walk out, the trigger has no low-end finesse, and the battery's a no-name pack with no replacement path. A working tool needs to be replaceable in the future. These aren't.

The battery platform call again

Same logic as with combi drills. If you've already got DeWalt XR batteries, get the DCF887. If you've got Makita LXT, get the DTD157. If you're starting fresh, the call's between DeWalt's tool depth and Bosch Pro's slightly nicer build, with Makita as the lightweight option.

Don't end up running three battery platforms. We've all seen the spark whose van has DeWalt, Milwaukee and Makita all on different chargers. It's chaos and it's expensive.

One bit on bits

An impact driver is only as good as the bit holder you put in it. Cheap bits chew up screw heads, slip out of the chuck, and snap when you drive them hard. The premium torsion bits like Wera or Wiha cost three times what cheap bits do and last about ten times longer. That's an easier maths problem than it looks.
