Cordless drills 2026 — what brushless actually changes for trades

Right. The cordless combi drill market is in a weird place right now. Brushed motors are mostly gone from the pro lineups. Brushless is the default, and the price gap has shrunk from about £80 to maybe £20 between equivalent brushed and brushless models — assuming the brushed model is even still made.
So — does it actually matter? Is brushless worth the upgrade if you're an apprentice with a working older drill, or a one-job-a-month plumber who's never going to push a drill hard? And which drills are the ones we'd actually buy in 2026?
We're going to be honest about something the marketing pages will not be: most trades don't push their drill hard enough for the brushless efficiency gain to matter that much. What does matter is heat tolerance, battery platform, and how the drill handles being dropped off a stepladder. Those are the things the long-term reviews actually flag.
What brushless really does on site
The textbook answer: brushless motors don't have brushes wearing down, so they last longer and run cooler. Both true. But the practical version is more nuanced.
Heat tolerance is the big one. A brushed drill driving 80mm screws through dry oak for half an hour will get hot enough to throttle its own torque. A brushless equivalent can keep going. If you're a chippy doing repeated long screws into thick stock, that's where brushless earns its keep.
Battery runtime — yes, brushless uses about 30 to 40 percent less current for the same task. So your 5Ah pack does what a brushed drill needed a 7-8Ah pack for. If you're the sort who comes back to a half-charged battery and wishes you didn't, brushless gives you a longer working window per charge.
Long-term durability — the brushes in a brushed drill wear out. They can be replaced on better pro brands, but on the budget end the drill's done at that point. A brushless motor doesn't wear in the same way. Most brushless failures are bearings, gearboxes, or chuck issues — same as brushed drills.
For a once-a-month DIY job? Brushed is fine and you'll save thirty quid. For a working trade tool? Brushless every time, and the gap is small enough now that it's not really a debate.
DeWalt XR 18V Brushless Combi Drill — the all-day site drill
The DeWalt XR brushless is what most working sparks and chippies seem to land on after going through one or two cheaper drills. It's the predictable choice and we'd struggle to argue against it.
The 18V XR battery platform is the bit that really matters. If you're running a DCF887 impact driver, a DCS391 circular saw, and a DCG412 grinder — they all share the same packs. Battery commonality across a kit is worth a lot more than a slightly better drill from a brand whose batteries don't fit anything else you own.
The drill itself — two-speed gearbox, brushless motor, all-metal chuck. Reviewers consistently flag two things in the long-term feedback: the chuck stays true after years of bit changes (the cheap plastic chuck on entry drills is the first thing to go), and the LED stays usable rather than the dim afterthought some brands do.
The catch is weight. It's not the lightest 18V drill on the shelf, especially with a 5Ah battery. If you're doing a lot of overhead work, that adds up across a day.
Bosch Professional GSB 18V Combi — the lighter, smoother alternative
If you've ever picked up a DeWalt and a Bosch Pro side by side, the Bosch feels lighter even when the spec sheet says they're comparable. The balance is different.
The GSB is in the Bosch Professional blue range, not the green DIY range — that distinction matters. Pro Bosch tools share the 18V battery platform and they're built to a properly different durability spec from the green tools.
What the long-term reviews flag: the gearbox is quiet, the clutch is genuinely useful (some drills have a clutch that's binary on/off in practice — this one actually steps), and the trigger control at low speed is excellent for delicate work. Sparks fitting accessories around finished trim love that.
What we'd flag: Bosch Professional packs are slightly more expensive than DeWalt XR equivalents in the UK. If you're a brand-agnostic apprentice starting from zero, that's a small thing. If you've already got a DeWalt kit, no — stay with what your batteries fit.
Milwaukee M18 BPDB — when you need raw torque
The Milwaukee M18 BPDB sits in a slightly different bracket. It's not the lightest, it's not the cheapest, and it's not the one with the best ergonomics. What it is is the drill that'll keep going when others throttle.
If you're a builder driving long structural screws, a roofer working through batten and felt all day, or a scaffolder using a drill for fixings into masonry where a hammer drill earns its name — the Milwaukee delivers more sustained torque than the DeWalt or Bosch equivalents. That's not marketing, that's what comes out of the long-term reviews when you read them properly.
The M18 battery platform is also the broadest of the three on tool count. If you're going to end up with a SDS, a multi-tool, a torch, a vacuum, and three more things by year five, Milwaukee has all of them on the same pack.
The downsides — it's the heaviest of the three, the chuck is fine but not class-leading, and the price tends to be higher than DeWalt for similar spec.
What we'd skip
Anything branded but unbranded. There's a flood of generic combi drills on Amazon at £40-£60 with names that change weekly. The motor's fine for hanging a shelf. It is not a working tool. The battery dies in eight months and there's no replacement available — the brand has rotated already.
Brushed Ryobi for trade work. Ryobi ONE+ is a fantastic platform for DIY, and the brushless Ryobi has its place. But a brushed Ryobi being asked to do plumber-level graft will struggle, and the warranty path's frustrating compared to DeWalt or Bosch Pro.
Cordless drills sold as 'kit specials' with no-name batteries. We've seen the same drill body sold by three different brands with three different battery shapes. None of those packs are going to be available in three years.
Battery commonality — the actual decision
The drill is rarely the most important choice. The battery platform is. Pick the platform first based on what other tools you'll buy across the next two years, then pick the drill within that platform.
For most trades that's a 5Ah pack as the daily driver, a 2Ah pack for overhead work, and a 9Ah pack on charge for the heavy stuff. Roughly £200 of batteries. That's why brand-jumping is expensive.

And — last bit — drop your drill less. Most cordless drill failures aren't motor failures. They're chuck damage from the drill landing chuck-first off a stepladder. A £15 drill holster on the toolbelt pays for itself the first month.
