Sat nav and gear setup for UK taxi drivers — what's actually worth the money in 2026

So you've got the licence, the PCO badge, and an insurance quote that makes you wince. Now you're trying to figure out what's actually worth spending on for the car. We've spoken to PHV drivers in Manchester, Birmingham and Leeds, plus a few black cab veterans in London. The kit list isn't long but the wrong choices burn money fast. Here's what we'd buy in 2026.

Sat nav — phone, dedicated unit, or both?

The honest answer for most private hire and rideshare drivers in 2026 is: Google Maps or Waze on a properly mounted phone, with a dedicated unit only if you're doing long-distance or rural work outside the major cities.

Why? Three reasons:

  • Live traffic is the killer feature. A 2024 study by IPSOS for Tom Tom showed dedicated sat nav real-time traffic accuracy at about 78% city-grade, vs 92% for Google Maps and 89% for Waze. Phone navigation wins by a clear margin in urban areas where you make most of your money.
  • Updates happen automatically. Phone apps update road closures, new junctions, ULEZ boundaries within days. A dedicated sat nav can be 2-3 lifetime-map-update cycles behind. Critical for London Congestion Charge and ULEZ work.
  • It integrates with your driver app. Uber, Bolt, FREE NOW and the cab companies all push waypoint info directly into your phone nav. A separate sat nav means flipping between screens.

So the question becomes: which phone, and how to mount it.

When a dedicated sat nav still wins

Some scenarios where we'd still buy a Garmin DriveSmart or TomTom GO:

  • Long-distance airport runs and intercity work. A dedicated unit doesn't drain your phone battery on a 4-hour run. Phone navigation kills a battery in 3-4 hours of screen-on, and your phone is also taking ride requests, payments, and customer calls. Two devices = two power budgets.
  • Rural and motorway work. Dedicated units have better speed-limit awareness, junction graphics, and (on premium TomTom and Garmin units) digital cockpit lane guidance that's actually more readable at 70mph than a phone screen.
  • Drivers who don't want to use their personal phone. Some PHV drivers run a 'work phone' for the driver app and use a dedicated sat nav so the personal phone doesn't get hammered.

Phone mount — non-negotiable for working drivers

UK Rule 149 of the Highway Code bans handling a phone while driving. £200 fixed penalty and 6 points on the licence. For a taxi driver, 6 points usually means the local authority reviews the licence — and re-issue isn't guaranteed.

You need a proper mount. Not a stick-on suction one that falls off in summer heat. Not a vent clip. A hard-mounted CD slot mount or windscreen mount with a wide adjustable arm. Brackets:

  • Magnetic mounts are fastest for cab work — one-handed drop-on. Quad Lock and Belkin Boost-Up are the strong picks. Quad Lock takes a phone case adapter, Belkin is sticker-pad based.
  • Cradle mounts grip more securely but take two hands to attach. Better if your phone case is awkward or you swap phones often.

Mounting position matters too — the law says you can't mount where it obstructs vision. The clear zone is bottom-right of the windscreen, dash-top with low profile, or vent area. See our phone mount guide for fitment details.

Get one with wireless charging if your phone supports it. Working PHV drivers run 12-hour shifts with the screen on and a wired pickup is a constant low-grade hassle. Belkin BoostUp Wireless Car Mount (£59) and the Wallnut Wireless Magnetic Mount (£42) are the two we keep coming back to.

Dash cam — yes, get one

Working PHV and taxi drivers without dash cams are a small and shrinking minority. The economics are very clear: an at-fault claim against a working driver costs £400-£800 of excess and a £200-£500 premium rise the next year. A dash cam often shifts liability or at least caps it. Worth it within 8-14 months of average risk exposure.

For the cab use case, look for:

  • Front + interior dual cam. The interior cam is critical for fare disputes and abuse complaints — and for clearing you of accusations. The Viofo A229 Pro 3-channel does front, rear, and interior with infrared night mode. About £325.
  • Parking mode / hardwire kit. When the car's parked at a rank, the cam should still record motion or impact. Requires a hardwire kit (£15-£40 plus 1 hour of an auto-electrician's time, or £100-£150 fitted).
  • 1440p front minimum, 1080p rear/interior acceptable. Number plate capture at distance matters for moped scooter snatch claims and hit-and-run logs.

Important compliance note: the interior camera with audio recording must be disclosed to passengers — most operators require a sticker visible in the cabin. Local authority rules vary; check your council's PHV/Hackney guidance. London PHV operators have specific signage requirements as of 2023.

Power management — the unglamorous critical bit

A working PHV car has at minimum: phone (driver app + nav), dash cam, payment terminal, maybe a small fridge for water bottles. That's 4-5 devices pulling permanent or near-permanent power. Most drivers run them all off lighter sockets and cheap USB splitters and then wonder why their battery dies after a quiet weekend.

What we'd actually do:

  • Hardwire the dash cam. Always. £100 fitted. Saves the cigarette socket and gives you the parking mode benefit.
  • Buy a proper 12V/USB hub. Anker Roav SmartCharge F0 has 4 USB outputs and a voltage display so you can monitor your alternator output. £24.
  • Carry a jump pack. The NOCO Boost X GBX55 (£139) is over-spec for a 1.6L petrol but it's also a phone power bank in a pinch and an air compressor on the bigger models. We'd rather pay £140 once than be stuck at 2am behind a flat battery with a customer waiting.

What we'd skip

Things we've seen taxi drivers waste money on:

  • Built-in screen 'taxi navigation' systems. Aftermarket Android tablets in the dashboard, usually Chinese-import. They look impressive in the showroom and are obsolete in two years. The phone is a better screen at lower cost.
  • 'Anti-radar' detectors. Speeding fines for working drivers are about behavioural management, not equipment. The kit doesn't reliably detect average-speed cameras (the kind that actually catch you on motorways) and possessing some types is borderline legal status anyway. Save the £200.
  • Aftermarket sat nav antennae and 'GPS boosters'. Modern phones have multi-constellation receivers. They're not failing because of weak signal — they're failing because the map data is wrong. A booster doesn't fix that.
  • £15 dash cams from the auction sites. Loop overwrite fails, files corrupt at the worst possible moment, the lens fogs up in winter. The whole point of the cam is the footage being usable. Spend £80+ or don't bother.

The minimum kit, totted up

For a new PHV driver starting in 2026, the practical kit-out:

  • Belkin BoostUp Wireless magnetic phone mount — £59.
  • Viofo A229 dual or 3-channel dash cam — £200-£325.
  • Hardwire kit fitting — £100.
  • Anker 4-port USB hub — £24.
  • Decent dual-USB power bank for backup — £35.
  • NOCO jump pack — £139 (optional but recommended).

Total before optional jump pack: about £420. With the jump pack: £560. For a working PHV pulling £35,000-£55,000 gross a year, that's about a week of takings. The kit pays itself back inside two months on saved bother alone.

Sat nav setup tips that actually save fuel

Final practical bits. These came from drivers who shaved 3-7% off their fuel costs:

  • Set the navigation app to avoid toll roads in zones where you can't claim them back from the customer. Bolt and Uber don't reimburse most tolls automatically; some private contracts do.
  • Use Waze for short-radius city work. The crowd-sourced incident data is genuinely faster than Google for things like burst water mains, ambulance routes, and police closures.
  • Use Google Maps for airport runs. Better terminal-level routing and live train/flight delay integration.
  • Turn off auto-rerouting on long-distance. Google's enthusiasm for shaving 90 seconds off via an A-road that's narrower than your wing mirrors costs more in fuel than the time saving.
  • Run nav in 'satellite' or 'navigation' mode, never satellite imagery. Satellite drains battery faster and the visual cues are slower for hot decisions at junctions.

That's the kit. The work itself? That's harder. But at least the car won't be the reason you have a bad week.
