Wet weather gear for scaffolders — what actually holds up

Scaffolders work when other trades go home. Rain doesn't stop a build — at least not until the wind picks up — and the bloke fitting tubes at 30 feet is the one who can't shelter under a van for ten minutes when the squall hits.

So scaffold rainwear has a job description nothing else on a building site does. It has to keep you dry through eight hours of horizontal Manchester drizzle. Move freely enough that you can hand-foot up a ladder without the jacket riding up to your armpits. Survive the abuse of clipping into harness D-rings, brushing past steel, and getting yanked at the cuffs every time you reach for a spanner.

I've gone through the forums — ScaffMag, the various scaffolder subreddits, NASC chatter — and pulled the rainwear that comes up by name. Then cross-referenced reviews. Here's what holds up.

What the spec sheet doesn't tell you

Hydrostatic head numbers — the "5,000mm waterproof" stuff manufacturers print — are nearly meaningless on a scaffold. Why? Because the failure mode for scaffold gear isn't water soaking through the fabric. It's water getting in at seams, cuffs, and the gap between collar and helmet rim.

What matters in real use:

  • Taped seams everywhere. Not just main seams. Pocket seams. Vent seams. The cheap jackets skip pocket-seam taping and water tracks into the lining.
  • Hi-vis to EN ISO 20471 Class 3. Class 2 is fine for groundworkers. On scaffold, you need to be visible from the front and back at distance, on a building wrapped in shrink-wrap, in poor light. Class 3 minimum.
  • Cuffs that grip. Velcro cuffs let water track up your sleeve when you're reaching above your head — which is most of the day on scaffold. Adjustable storm cuffs or proper elastic inner cuffs are the only thing that actually works.
  • Hood compatible with a helmet. Scaffolders wear hard hats. A hood designed to go over a bare head will not fit over a Centurion or JSP, and the cheap workaround — hood up under the hat — channels water down the back of your neck.
  • EN 343 rating. 3/3 is what you want. The numbers are waterproof / breathability, both 1 to 4. 3,1 (which most cheap PU jackets carry) means waterproof but not breathable. You will sweat yourself wet inside a 3,1 jacket on a mild day.

The shortlist — what scaffolders actually buy

Helly Hansen Voss — the cheap-and-honest one

The Helly Hansen Workwear Voss Rain Jacket is the entry point. PU-coated polyester, EN 343 3,1, Helly's Helox+ membrane technology. Around £35–£50 retail.

It's not breathable enough for hard physical work in mild weather — you'll cook. But for cold, properly wet days where you're actively moving? It does the job, and it survives. The PU coating eventually crackles around the elbows after maybe 18 months of daily use, but for £40 you can't really argue.

Where it falls down for scaffold specifically: the hood is helmet-incompatible without faffing. Buy it for groundwork days, not for swinging tubes.

Helly Hansen Manchester — the upgrade pick

The Helly Hansen Manchester Waterproof sits a tier up. Same Helox+ tech as the Voss, but 100% taped seams (not just main), proper storm cuffs, and a hood that's actually rated to fit over a helmet. EN 343 Class 3,1.

This is the one that scaffolders mention by name on forums when asked "what do you wear for tubes in winter." Two-tone hi-vis means it scrubs up reasonably well even after a year of cement-and-rust contact.

Portwest H440 — the budget hi-vis

The Portwest H440 Lightweight Hi-Vis Rain Jacket is what site managers buy when they're kitting out a crew on a budget and don't want to argue. Around £15–£25, depending on size and supplier. EN 343 3,1, EN ISO 20471 Class 3.

Lightweight, packable, won't last a winter of hard scaffold use. Buy it as a "spare in the van for the unexpected downpour" — not as your main piece. The reviews are full of "great for the price, replaced after 8 months."

Portwest S466 Hi-Vis Traffic Jacket — the over-everything option

Where the Portwest S466 Hi-Vis Waterproof Traffic Jacket earns its keep is the cut. It's designed to go over a hoodie, a fleece, and a body warmer. Generous through the chest and back. The downside is it looks like a bin bag with stripes, but on a scaffold in February nobody's checking the cut.

EN 343, EN 471, EN 20471. Quilted lining version exists too if you're working through proper cold spells.

Portwest S585 Winter Overalls — the all-in-one

For full-day exposure on a winter scaffold, separates always lose to a one-piece. The Portwest S585 Hi-Vis Waterproof Winter Work Overalls are an all-in-one waterproof with integrated quilted lining. Hi-vis, EN 343 3,1.

Not for everyone. They're hot for active work, awkward for toilet breaks, and look ridiculous in the pub afterwards. But for static guards on a wrap, or top-lift work in a hailstorm, you can't beat the wind-out-the-bottom protection of a one-piece.

Helly Hansen Impertech — the proper old-school waterproof

The Helly Hansen Workwear Impertech is heavier-duty PU. The kind of jacket you'd wear in a fishing trawler — and the kind you want when you're dropping tubes in a coastal February gale. Heavier than the Voss. Less breathable. Considerably more weatherproof at the seams.

Worth a look for offshore-adjacent jobs (port construction, harbour walls) where you're getting hit with sea spray as well as rain.

Portwest C465 3-in-1 Contrast Jacket — the year-round pick

Two jackets in one. The Portwest C465 3-in-1 has an inner fleece that zips out, so summer rain you wear the shell, winter you wear both. Hi-vis, EN 343 Class 3,1.

The compromise of any 3-in-1 is that neither layer is as good as a dedicated piece. But for one purchase covering most of the year, it's a sensible buy.

What we'd buy with £150 today

Realistic scaffolder rainwear setup for £150 (give or take):

  • Helly Hansen Manchester jacket — main piece, around £80
  • Portwest hi-vis waterproof trousers (separate, look for the matching ones) — around £35
  • Portwest H440 lightweight as the spare in the van — £20
  • Decent gaiters or proper waterproof boot covers — £15

The trousers are the bit most people skimp on, and it's a mistake. Wet trousers wick water down into your boots, and once your feet are wet the day's done. Don't buy a brilliant jacket and pair it with B&Q overtrousers.

What dies first

Few honest predictions from forum patterns:

  • Cuffs. Always cuffs. The fabric at the wrist hem is rubbed by every reach, and it goes tatty within six months on hard use.
  • The zip. Dust, cement powder, and sweat conspire. Lubricate with candle wax or proper zip lube every couple of months. Trust me.
  • The hood drawstring. Snaps off, gets pulled out, vanishes. Worth keeping a spare cord-lock in the van.
  • The pocket linings. Carry too many bolts and you'll wear through the bottom corner.

Reproof every six months with Nikwax or similar. The PU coatings degrade with cement dust contact, and a fresh DWR layer extends jacket life by maybe a year.

One last thing

Hi-vis isn't just about being seen by the public. On a busy scaffold there are blokes lifting tubes, banksmen directing forklifts, scaffold cleaners chucking debris. The brighter you are, the longer you keep working without anybody pulling work to figure out where you're standing. Spec for visibility first, weather second. Both matter — but only one prevents an A&E trip.

What about the trousers

I keep meaning to write a separate piece on this. Briefly: matching waterproof overtrousers from the same brand as your jacket are the right answer. Helly Hansen, Portwest, and Pulsar all do trousers paired to their jackets that share the same hi-vis spec, same EN 343 rating, and seal at the waist. Don't mix Portwest trousers with a Helly jacket and expect the colours to match — they won't, and on a regulated site you'll get pulled.

The Portwest H445 Hi-Vis Waterproof Long Raincoat is also worth a mention here — a longer cut that does some of the work an overtrousers would do, particularly for groundwork-heavy days. Less mobile on tubes, more practical for static work.

Summer rain — the forgotten problem

Most scaffold rainwear is sold for winter. But a July downpour at 22°C is just as wet, and if you're wearing a non-breathable PU shell you'll be soaked from the inside before the rain reaches you.

For summer wet days, a 3,3 EN 343 jacket — full breathability — earns its money. Helly Hansen's higher-end pieces hit 3,3. The cheap PU options don't. If you're on scaffold year-round, owning two jackets — a 3,1 winter shell and a 3,3 summer breathable — is the difference between coming home dry and coming home wet from your own sweat.

Portwest's F440 Hi-Vis Iona Classic Rain Jacket sits between the two — lightweight enough for summer use but with enough taping to hold up to a real soaking. Not perfect for either season, but a single-jacket compromise if budget is tight.
